Greater Noida Six-Year-Old Drowns In Pit, Contractor Arrested; Two Officials Removed

A 53-year-old contractor has been arrested in connection with the death of a six-year-old boy who drowned in a water-filled pit inside a residential society in Greater Noida's Knowledge Park 2 area. The incident occurred late Saturday evening, following which the Greater Noida Authority removed two officials from their duties, citing negligence. The arrested contractor, identified as Manoj Jain, a resident of Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad, was taken into custody on Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Greater Noida, Ravi Shankar Nim, said the contractor was arrested on charges of negligence and that further investigation into the case is underway. The six-year-old boy reportedly drowned after falling into a 10-feet-deep pit filled with water inside the residential society. The incident triggered concern among residents and raised questions over safety measures at construction and development sites in the area.
Authorities have begun examining the circumstances that led to the child accessing the dangerous spot. The Greater Noida Authority said it has filed a complaint against the contractor at the Knowledge Park police station. In an official statement, the authority said the contractor company has been blacklisted following the incident. It also announced disciplinary action against officials responsible for supervising the work. According to the authority, water department supervisor Akash Kumar and technical supervisor Jonny Kumar have been removed from active duties due to alleged negligence.

The authority said the names of both officials have also been recommended for inclusion in the First Information Report (FIR), while directions for a departmental inquiry have been initiated by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The incident has brought renewed focus on safety standards at construction and infrastructure sites in residential areas. Open pits, excavations and water-filled areas can pose serious risks, particularly for children, if proper barricading and warning measures are not put in place.
Residents and officials have often raised concerns over the need for stricter monitoring of construction activities and better enforcement of safety protocols. Authorities are responsible for ensuring that hazardous areas are secured and that contractors follow necessary precautions to prevent accidents. The Greater Noida Authority said action against those found responsible would continue as part of the investigation. The police are also expected to examine whether safety guidelines were ignored during the creation and maintenance of the pit.
The child's death has led to demands for greater accountability from contractors and government agencies involved in development projects. As the investigation progresses, authorities will look into the sequence of events that resulted in the drowning and determine whether further legal action is required against additional individuals. The case highlights the importance of maintaining strict safety measures around construction zones and ensuring that potentially dangerous areas are properly protected to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
