In a chilling incident that has shocked the quiet town of Baripada in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, a 40-year-old man, Sambhu Singh, beheaded his 70-year-old father, Baidhar Singh, on March 4, 2025, over a petty dispute involving Rs 10. The gruesome murder unfolded in a village under the jurisdiction of Chandua Police Station, triggered by the victim’s refusal to fund his son’s purchase of ‘gutkha,’ a popular chewable tobacco product. What followed was a violent escalation that ended with Sambhu walking into the police station, clutching his father’s severed head, to surrender.
According to police reports, the altercation began as a heated exchange between Sambhu and his parents at their home. When Baidhar denied the Rs 10 demand, Sambhu, enraged, grabbed a sharp weapon—believed to be a locally available blade or axe—and decapitated his father in a fit of fury. His mother, present at the scene, narrowly escaped harm, fleeing as her son turned his aggression toward her. Sambhu then abandoned his father’s body on the verandah and made the macabre trek to the police station, where he calmly turned himself in.
Baripada Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pravat Mallick described the incident as a tragic outcome of a trivial disagreement. “The accused became furious over the refusal of Rs 10 for gutkha. It’s a senseless act driven by rage,” Mallick stated. A forensic team has since descended on the village to gather evidence, while the police continue their investigation to uncover any underlying factors, such as mental health issues or prior tensions within the family.
This horrifying patricide underscores a recurring theme of impulsive violence in the region, often sparked by minor disputes. As the community reels from the brutality, authorities are working to piece together the full story of a son’s unimaginable act against his own father—all for a mere Rs 10.
