GMRL Chief Reviews Gurugram Metro Works, Pushes For Faster Utility Shifting

GMRL chief inspects Gurugram Metro sites, urges faster utility relocation.

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) officials have stepped up efforts to accelerate construction of the first phase of the Gurugram Metro, with particular attention on utility shifting and coordination among agencies. GMRL chairperson D. Thara and CEO Chander Shekhar Khare inspected key construction sites on Saturday and directed officials to resolve infrastructure-related hurdles quickly. The metro corporation is targeting August 2028 for the start of operations on Phase One, making timely completion of ongoing preparatory and construction work crucial.

Phase One of the project will connect Millennium City Centre with the Sector 9 metro station near Basai and will also include a spur towards Dwarka Expressway. Officials said the project has achieved around 12 to 13 per cent physical progress so far. The next major construction milestone is expected near Sector 40, where GMRL plans to launch its first U-shaped girders next week. Pier caps have already been installed on pillars at the location earlier this month, marking further progress in the elevated corridor's construction.

During the inspection, Thara, who is also secretary in the Department of Capital Development under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, visited Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk along with Khare and representatives from various agencies. Project teams briefed the officials on construction progress, site constraints, upcoming activities and important milestones. The inspection was aimed at identifying issues that could slow construction and ensuring that different departments work together to resolve them without unnecessary delays.

Utility shifting emerged as one of the major concerns during the review. Officials examined the relocation of electrical infrastructure, roads and other services that could interfere with metro construction. GMRL stressed the need for closer coordination between agencies responsible for these utilities so that relocation work can be completed on schedule. Representatives from GMRL, the National Highways Authority of India, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited and other utility-owning agencies participated in the discussions.

A review meeting was subsequently held at the GMRL office to assess construction progress, upcoming milestones, utility relocation and coordination between participating agencies. Officials said uninterrupted execution would depend on resolving several outstanding issues, including the transfer of private land, shifting of a power substation and relocation of gas pipelines. The removal of structures between Subhash Chowk and Basai Chowk is also considered important for maintaining progress along the planned corridor.

The push to speed up the work comes as the Haryana government continues to monitor the metro project's implementation. Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi had directed the district administration and local agencies on Friday to accelerate private land acquisition and utility shifting during a high-powered committee meeting in Chandigarh. With the project targeting operations by August 2028, authorities are now focusing on removing construction bottlenecks and improving coordination so that major civil works can proceed according to schedule.
