Gangster Gunned Down! UP STF and Jharkhand Police Encounter Sharpshooter

Mafia’s Marksman Down: UP STF and Jharkhand Police Gun Down Mukhtar Ansari’s Sharpshooter in Jamshedpur

A high-octane showdown late Saturday night in Jamshedpur ended with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UP STF) and Jharkhand Police taking out Anuj Kanaujia, a 50-year-old sharpshooter tied to the infamous Mukhtar Ansari gang.

The joint operation, a surgical strike against organized crime, left the notorious gunman dead and an STF officer wounded, signaling a relentless crackdown on Ansari’s lingering network.

Kanaujia, a Mau native with a Rs 2.5 lakh bounty on his head, had been ducking authorities for over five years, wanted in 23 cases spanning murder, extortion, land grabs, and arms smuggling across Uttar Pradesh’s Mau, Ghazipur, and Azamgarh districts.

Acting on pinpoint intel, the UP STF’s Gorakhpur unit, led by Deputy Superintendent DK Shahi, teamed up with Jharkhand Police to corner him in Jamshedpur’s Bhumihar mansion area. What followed was a fierce firefight—Kanaujia unleashed nearly 20 rounds and lobbed a bomb in a desperate bid to flee, forcing the team to return fire.

Shahi took a bullet to the shoulder but held the line until Kanaujia fell, riddled with bullets. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police recovered two pistols, live cartridges, and mobile phones from the scene, now under scrutiny for leads on his syndicate. The operation, timed eerily on the first anniversary of Mukhtar Ansari’s death on March 28, 2024, underscores Uttar Pradesh’s bulldozer-backed war on mafia remnants.

With Kanaujia’s house already razed in Azamgarh and his family tangled in the Gangster Act, this kill shot in Jharkhand sends a loud message: no corner’s safe for Ansari’s old guard.
