Fugitive Nabbed in Bihar After 13-Year Manhunt
Thane Murder Suspect Caught in Dramatic Arrest
A 39-year-old fugitive, Mahanand Surujikant Mistry, alias Bangali, was arrested in Bihar’s West Champaran district after evading capture for nearly 13 years, Thane police announced on Sunday. Mistry was wanted for the brutal murder of his 21-year-old roommate, Vinod Gupta, in Maharashtra’s Bhayander area on August 6, 2012.
The crime unfolded at a shop in Kashibai Industrial Estate, where Mistry and Gupta, who shared a room, clashed over cooking arrangements. “The dispute turned deadly when Mistry allegedly stabbed Gupta with a sharp knife, killing him on the spot,” said Senior Police Inspector Pramod Badakh. A murder case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Navghar police station.
Mistry fled the scene and became a master of evasion, frequently changing locations across Delhi, Patna, and even Nepal. “He concealed his identity and avoided contact to stay off our radar,” Badakh explained. Despite his efforts, a recent tip-off pinpointed Mistry’s hideout in Kamta Colony, Narkatiyaganj.

Acting swiftly, a team from the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police crime branch tracked him to a bus stop in Narkatiyaganj. “We apprehended him a couple of days ago, and during initial questioning, he confessed to the crime,” Badakh revealed. Mistry has been handed over to Navghar police for further investigation.
This arrest marks the end of a 13-year pursuit, bringing justice closer for the family of Vinod Gupta.
