Friend Alleges Driver Lost Control Before Crash Involving Atiq Ahmad's Son

Abaan Ahmed, the 20-year-old youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, and his friend were killed after the SUV they were travelling in crashed into a road divider in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district on Thursday, police said. The accident took place at around 10.30 am while the group was on its way to Jhansi. Police said preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was speeding before the driver lost control, leading to the fatal crash. According to officials, Abaan's friend who died in the accident has been identified as Sonu, 25, son of Raja.

Both occupants suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Investigators believe the SUV hit the road divider after the driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. Authorities are examining the exact sequence of events and are expected to review eyewitness accounts and other evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have not ruled out any other factors and said the probe is continuing. Three other people travelling in the SUV sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to Jhansi Medical College for treatment. After receiving initial medical care, the injured were shifted to Prayagraj at the request of their family members.

Circle Officer (City) Ramveer Singh said an ambulance carrying the injured left for Prayagraj at around 9.30 pm so they could undergo further treatment there. Their condition has not been officially disclosed. Late on Thursday night, the bodies of Abaan and Sonu were handed over to their families after a panel of three doctors conducted post-mortem examinations at Jhansi Medical College. Family members transported both bodies to Prayagraj shortly before midnight for the last rites. Police coordinated the transfer while ensuring the required legal formalities were completed following the post-mortem.

According to police, Abaan Ahmed, a resident of Prayagraj, was travelling to Jhansi to meet his two brothers, who are currently lodged in separate jails in the district. The visit was reportedly planned as a family meeting when the accident occurred. The police said the SUV was carrying five occupants at the time of the crash. While initial findings point towards overspeeding as a possible cause, officials said the investigation will determine whether road conditions, driver error or any mechanical issues also contributed to the accident.

Abaan was the youngest son of Atiq Ahmed, the former Member of Parliament who was one of Uttar Pradesh's most controversial political figures. Atiq Ahmed had a long criminal history, with dozens of cases registered against him over several decades. He and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead in Prayagraj in April 2023 while being escorted by police for a medical examination. The killings, which occurred in the presence of media personnel, drew nationwide attention and led to a major investigation. Since then, members of the Ahmed family have remained under public scrutiny, with several legal proceedings continuing against different family members.

The deaths of Abaan Ahmed and his friend have once again brought attention to the Ahmed family, though police have stressed that the incident appears to be a road accident. Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials said forensic and technical evidence, along with statements from the injured occupants and eyewitnesses, will be examined before a final conclusion is reached. Meanwhile, the injured continue to receive treatment in Prayagraj, and the families of the deceased are preparing to perform the final rites.
