French Man Charged With Sexual Assault On Miami-Bound Flight Claims "Didn't Think It Was A Big Deal"

French man charged with sexually assaulting sleeping passenger on Miami-bound flight.

A 48-year-old French national has been charged with abusive sexual contact following an alleged mid-air assault on a flight from Zurich to Miami, according to a federal criminal complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida. The accused, Guillaume Sebastien Roger Mattler, is currently in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.

The alleged assault took place aboard Swiss International Air Lines Flight LX64 on April 28, where Mattler and a 29-year-old woman, who did not know each other, were seated next to one another in the first-class cabin. According to investigators, the woman had fallen asleep during the flight when two nearby passengers noticed suspicious behaviour and alerted the cabin crew.

Witness accounts indicate that Mattler allegedly touched the woman without her consent while she was asleep. One passenger reportedly recorded video evidence of the incident and informed a flight attendant. According to the complaint, a crew member who intervened observed Mattler’s hand placed over the woman’s clothing in an inappropriate manner, prompting immediate action to separate him from the victim.

Authorities said the woman was unaware of the incident until she was woken up by crew members, after which she appeared visibly distressed. Officials reported that she began shaking and crying upon learning what had allegedly occurred during her sleep, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the emotional impact on the victim.

The complaint further alleges that Mattler later attempted to hand the woman a note complimenting her appearance while she was asleep. During questioning, he initially denied the accusations but later admitted to touching her after being confronted with witness testimony and video evidence. He reportedly told investigators that he “did not think it was such a big deal", claiming his intention had been to initiate contact.

As of May 3, Mattler remains detained at a federal facility in Miami as legal proceedings continue. The case highlights ongoing concerns about passenger safety and conduct on international flights, with authorities emphasising strict enforcement of laws related to in-flight offences and the protection of passengers.
