Four Family Members Killed, One Injured In Sikkim Landslide

A midnight landslide in Gyalshing, Sikkim, kills four family members; a child survives with injuries.

A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rainfall claimed the lives of four family members and left a seven-year-old boy critically injured in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district. The disaster struck around midnight on Thursday in the Upper Rimbi area under Yangthang Constituency, demolishing the family’s home while they slept, police reported.

Gyalshing Superintendent of Police Tshering Sherpa said three of the six family members died instantly when the landslide hit. Sikkim Police, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel, and local villagers launched a swift rescue operation, constructing a temporary tree log bridge over the flooded Hume River to reach the site. Two injured women were rushed to Gyalshing District Hospital, but one succumbed to her injuries. The young boy, found alive amidst the debris, remains in critical condition.

The operation, described as high-risk due to ongoing rain, continues as authorities search for three missing individuals, believed to be from the same area. “It has been a challenging effort, but we’ve done our best to save lives,” Sherpa said, thanking the community and SSB for their support. The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Sikkim, warning of potential landslides.
