Four Arrested in Assam for Vandalising Christmas Decorations in Nalbari

VHP, Bajrang Dal members detained for vandalism.

Authorities in Assam's Nalbari district arrested four individuals affiliated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on Thursday following allegations of vandalizing Christmas decorations at a school and damaging festive items in commercial establishments. The detainees include VHP district secretary Bhaskar Deka, vice-president Manash Jyoti Patgiri, assistant secretary Biju Dutta, and Bajrang Dal district convenor Nayan Talukdar. Police confirmed the arrests stemmed from incidents reported on Wednesday, emphasizing unlawful entry and deliberate destruction of property.

The primary site of disruption was St Mary's School in Panigaon village under Belsor police station jurisdiction, where the accused allegedly trespassed and targeted external decorations, including lights, plant pots, and other ornamental articles prepared for Christmas celebrations. Some items were set ablaze, causing significant property loss. A senior police official described the actions as deliberate vandalism, noting that the perpetrators also issued warnings against proceeding with planned festive events at the school while chanting religious slogans.

Beyond the school premises, the group reportedly extended their activities to Nalbari town, visiting shops and shopping malls specializing in Christmas merchandise. They allegedly ignited goods near the Jain Mandir area and destroyed items inside several business outlets, further escalating concerns over targeted interference with seasonal observances. These coordinated actions disrupted local preparations for the holiday, affecting both educational institutions and commercial vendors.
