Surat Custody Death: Probe Launched Into Foreign National's Death

Foreign national dies during RPF questioning at Surat station.

A foreign national died while in the custody of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Surat railway station on the night of August 17 after he was detained following an altercation with passengers aboard the Golden Temple Express, officials said. The unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, was travelling in a general coach of the train from Mumbai to Delhi when the incident occurred. His death while being questioned at the RPF post has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the events that preceded his death.

According to police, the trouble began after the train left Vapi station. The man reportedly got into an argument with fellow passengers over standing near the door of the coach. What initially appeared to be a disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation between the man and other passengers. During the quarrel, he allegedly picked up a fire extinguisher inside the coach and used it to assault passengers, following which railway authorities were alerted and the man was detained.

The foreign national was subsequently taken into custody and brought to the RPF post at Surat railway station for questioning. Officials said he died during the questioning process on the night of August 17. The exact circumstances leading to his death have not yet been publicly established. Authorities are expected to examine the events from the time the man was detained on the train until he was taken to the RPF post, including his physical condition and interactions with officials during that period.

The identity and nationality of the deceased have not been disclosed by authorities so far. As part of the investigation, officials are likely to gather statements from passengers who witnessed the confrontation inside the Golden Temple Express, as well as railway and RPF personnel involved in detaining and handling the man. The sequence of events inside the coach will be important in determining how the confrontation escalated and what happened before the man was taken off the train.

The man's death while in official custody is also expected to bring scrutiny to the circumstances of his detention and questioning. Authorities will need to establish whether he had any medical distress or injuries before arriving at the RPF post and whether any medical assistance was sought after he was detained. The post-mortem and other legally required procedures are expected to help determine the immediate cause of death, while the broader inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident took place on the Golden Temple Express, which was travelling from Mumbai towards Delhi. The altercation reportedly occurred after the train passed Vapi, with the disagreement centred on the man's position near the coach door before it turned physical. Further information about the deceased, the passengers involved in the confrontation, and the findings of the authorities is awaited. The investigation is expected to establish the full sequence of events and clarify how the foreign national died while in RPF custody at Surat railway station.
