Five Women Arrested as Delhi Police Bust Two Gangs Targeting Commuters, Recover ₹1 Crore

Delhi busts two women-led theft gangs, arresting five and recovering jewellery and valuables worth ₹1 crore.

Delhi Police on Wednesday dismantled two highly organised women-led theft gangs responsible for a spate of high-value snatchings at crowded transit hubs, arresting five female suspects and recovering stolen jewellery, watches, and cash worth approximately ₹1 crore. The breakthrough followed an exhaustive investigation involving analysis of over 100 CCTV footages from railway stations and public areas across Delhi and Gujarat.

The gangs specialised in targeting women commuters during rush hours, operating with remarkable speed inside elevators and on escalators. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra explained that the thieves exploited momentary congestion to quietly remove gold chains, bangles, earrings, and expensive watches before melting into the crowd within seconds. One of the arrested women is a habitual offender with 13 previous cases registered against her.

Key evidence emerged from CCTV recordings at Sarai Rohilla and New Delhi Railway Stations, where the accused were seen repeatedly using the same modus operandi. Technical surveillance combined with human intelligence enabled police to track their movements across districts, leading to coordinated raids that resulted in the recovery of the entire haul of stolen valuables.

Among the five arrested, police identified members of one interstate gang shuttling between Gujarat and Delhi and another locally operating out of central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area. Authorities described both groups as tightly knit and professional, deliberately preying on women because jewellery thefts in packed spaces offered high returns with minimal risk of immediate confrontation.

With the recovered items valued at nearly ₹1 crore, the bust is being seen as a major success for the Railway Police. Officials have intensified patrolling at major stations and issued fresh advisories urging passengers—especially women—to remain vigilant in lifts, escalators, and crowded platforms.

The investigation continues as police probe possible additional associates and examine whether the gangs supplied stolen jewellery to larger fencing networks operating across northern India.
