Father Alleges Foul Play in Jadavpur Student Anamika Mandal’s Death

Father suspects conspiracy; NCW demands thorough probe.

The mysterious death of Anamika Mandal, a 21-year-old third-year English Honours student at Jadavpur University, has taken a dramatic turn as her father, Arnab Mandal, alleges foul play and prepares to file a police complaint. Anamika was found unconscious in a campus pond on the night of September 12 and was declared dead at a nearby hospital, leaving her family and the university community in shock. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also stepped in, urging Kolkata Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Speaking to reporters at his home in Nimta, where he performed Anamika’s last rites on Sunday, Arnab Mandal expressed deep suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death. “Anamika didn’t know how to swim. Why would she go near the pond at 10 pm?” he questioned. He revealed that a professor handed him Anamika’s mobile phone and hair clip, retrieved by an unidentified student from the pondside, but her glasses remain missing—a detail that has fueled his doubts. “I wonder whether someone deliberately pushed her into the water. My daughter did not consume alcohol, but if she did that night, it was part of a conspiracy,” Mandal asserted, demanding that police interrogate her friends who were present at the scene.

Initially, the family had not suspected foul play, but lingering questions prompted Mandal to reconsider. “Certain doubts haunted us afterward. We want the truth to come out,” he said, confirming his decision to lodge a formal complaint. The case has drawn significant attention, with the NCW taking suo motu cognizance of the incident after a media report titled “Woman Student Found Dead Inside Jadavpur University.” NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, calling for a comprehensive and impartial investigation, including a forensic examination and post-mortem report. The commission also seeks an inquiry into the university’s role in ensuring campus safety, demanding an action-taken report within three days.

The NCW’s intervention, highlighted in a post on X, underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for clarity. The incident has raised concerns about student safety on the Jadavpur University campus, with many questioning how such a tragedy could occur in a supposedly secure environment. As the investigation unfolds, the Mandal family and the public await answers, hoping for justice in a case that has left a grieving father searching for the truth behind his only daughter’s untimely death.
