Farmer Dies In Accidental Firing At Delhi Bank While Updating Aadhaar

A 27-year-old farmer died after being accidentally shot inside a bank in Delhi while visiting the branch to update his Aadhaar card, police said. The incident occurred around 10:30 am when a security guard's firearm discharged while he was loading it, triggering panic among customers and bank employees. The victim, identified as Manish Kumar, was rushed to Rao Tula Ram Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Police have arrested the security guard in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the accused security guard, Vinod Kumar, 53, was loading cartridges into his 12-bore double-barrel gun when it accidentally went off. The bullet struck Manish Kumar in the back, causing him to collapse inside the bank. Hearing the gunshot, customers and staff rushed out of the premises before returning to find the injured man lying on the floor. Emergency services were alerted immediately, but the victim could not be saved.

During preliminary questioning, Vinod Kumar told investigators that he had reported late for duty and was loading the firearm after the bank had already opened, with employees and customers present inside. Police said the weapon may have discharged due to negligence or a possible technical malfunction, though the exact cause is yet to be determined. Kumar, a resident of a village in Haryana's Jhajjar district, served in the Indian Army before retiring in 2018 and had been working as a security guard at the bank through a private security agency for the past two years.

Investigators have seized the 12-bore gun used in the incident and sent it for forensic examination. Police have also collected CCTV footage from the bank to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify whether standard security protocols were followed. Officials are examining whether loading a firearm after the bank had opened amounted to gross negligence and whether any procedural lapses contributed to the fatal shooting.

The victim's post-mortem examination has been conducted, and police are awaiting both the forensic and post-mortem reports to establish the precise circumstances of the incident. A case has been registered against the accused security guard, who has since been arrested, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation. Authorities said the inquiry will also determine if additional accountability lies with the security agency or bank management regarding firearm handling procedures.
