Ex-Navy Officer Dies in Gurugram After Wife Accidentally Stabs Him in Chest

Retired Navy officer dies after wife’s knife accidentally pierces his chest while drunk.

A heartbreaking incident in Gurugram’s Nakhrola village has left a family in shock after a 45-year-old retired Indian Navy personnel, Sunil Kumar, died from a stab wound to the chest. The injury reportedly occurred “accidentally” when his wife, Mamta, who was chopping vegetables with a knife in hand, rushed to steady him as he lost balance while intoxicated on January 18, 2026.

According to police, Sunil Kumar — who retired from the Navy about five years ago and was working with a private company — was drinking at home when he began walking toward the bathroom. Mamta, attempting to prevent him from falling, moved quickly to support him, but the knife she was holding pierced his chest during the moment. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Initially, the family informed authorities that Sunil had suffered a heart attack. However, the post-mortem examination revealed a clear stab injury to the chest, prompting police to register an FIR against Mamta under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) at Kherki Daula police station. Sub Inspector Ranjit Singh confirmed that the accidental nature of the incident is under investigation, with no evidence of foul play reported so far.

Sunil Kumar lived with his wife Mamta and their two sons in the village home. Police are continuing their probe, including questioning family members and examining forensic details, to ascertain the exact sequence of events. Such incidents, though claimed as accidents, often draw scrutiny during early investigations to rule out any intentional act. Authorities have urged caution around kitchen tools and alcohol consumption to prevent similar tragedies.
