#JUSTIN: Ex-Army Chief Issues Statement Amid Controversy Over Memoir

Former army chief issues clarification on his memoir as political and publishing controversy intensifies.

Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane (Retd.) has broken his public silence amid an unfolding controversy surrounding his unpublished memoir Four Stars of Destiny, clarifying the status of the book and aligning with his publisher’s official position. The brief response comes amid political debate and legal scrutiny over claims about the memoir’s distribution and content.

On Tuesday, Naravane took to X (formerly Twitter) to repost a published statement from Penguin Random House India (PRHI) — the memoir’s official publisher — with a succinct comment: “This is the status of the book.” The post reiterated that the memoir has not yet been published in print or digital form and remains unavailable for sale or distribution.

The clarification arrives against the backdrop of escalating political contention over alleged unauthorised circulation of the manuscript. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly insisted that portions of the memoir are in the public domain — even suggesting earlier references and postings related to the book — while questioning PRHI’s statement and highlighting contradictions between published claims and social media posts.

PRHI has maintained that it retains sole publishing rights and that Four Stars of Destiny has not entered official publication, urging that any circulating copies are unauthorised. Legal action, including a First Information Report (FIR) by the Delhi Police, has been filed to investigate alleged leaks and improper distribution of the unpublished work.

Naravane’s public endorsement of the publisher’s position is significant, given the intense parliamentary and media focus triggered by the dispute. With both political and legal dimensions intensifying, his statement aims to ground the discussion in the documented status of the book rather than speculation.

The memoir controversy has added strain to ongoing political debates, prompting dialogue about the intersection of national security, freedom of expression, and parliamentary norms. Observers note that how the matter evolves could influence broader discussions on transparency and the handling of sensitive personal and historical narratives by public figures.
