The suspect, identified as Mohammad Sarju, a local resident, allegedly lured the minor to a secluded spot near a railway crossing on Saturday afternoon and committed the assault.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Radharaman Singh reported that the girl returned home bleeding, prompting her parents to seek immediate medical attention. Initially taken to a nearby hospital, she was later referred to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), where she remains stable and conscious. The incident sparked outrage, leading to a swift police response.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Shashank Singh detailed the arrest: “Based on a tip-off that Mohammad Sarju was attempting to flee Lucknow, Vibhutikhand police intercepted him at Hahnemann Crossing. When confronted, Sarju opened fire on the team, forcing us to retaliate. He was shot in the leg and subsequently arrested.” The injured suspect is currently receiving treatment at a community health centre.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following a complaint from the victim’s family. Police recovered an illegal firearm and cartridges from Sarju, reinforcing the intensity of the confrontation.
