ED Searches Bengal Congress Leader Dilip Turi's Home Over ECL Business Links

The agency has not disclosed the case or allegations behind the search.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday searched the residence of Congress leader and businessman Dilip Turi in Andal in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district as part of scrutiny into his business dealings linked to services provided at Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) collieries and open-cast mines. The search operation began in the early morning, with an ED team reaching Turi’s residence at around 6 am along with central security personnel, including CRPF officers. The action attracted attention in the coal belt, where ECL’s mining activities and related service contracts form a significant part of the local industrial landscape.

During the operation, ED officials searched the residence and examined documents and other materials. Security personnel remained deployed around the premises while the search was underway. However, the agency did not immediately disclose the specific case under which the action was being carried out or provide details about the allegations being examined. It was also not immediately known whether officials seized any documents or other material during the search. Details about whether Turi or any other person was questioned by the agency were also not available at the time of the report.

Turi is a businessman associated with the local Congress unit and an NGO and is involved in providing ambulances and other four-wheelers at various ECL collieries and open-cast mining areas. His business activities include supplying vehicles used for services in different ECL locations. The ED’s search comes amid scrutiny of these business dealings, although the agency has not publicly explained the precise connection between the contracts and the investigation. No specific allegation against Turi was disclosed by the agency at the time of the search.

According to sources, some of the ambulances involved in these arrangements were brought from Jharkhand and subsequently deployed in different ECL areas through tender-based service arrangements. These vehicles were reportedly used as part of services provided at various mining locations. However, the exact nature of the contracts, the companies or entities involved and their relevance to the ED’s action have not been established. The available information does not indicate whether the searches have resulted in any confirmed findings or whether any wrongdoing has been established against Turi.

The ED had not issued a statement on the searches or identified the investigation under which the operation was conducted when the report was filed. As a result, details about the scope of the inquiry, the documents being examined and any possible next steps remain unclear. A search by an investigating agency does not by itself establish wrongdoing, and the specific allegations, if any, can only be assessed once the agency provides further details about the case.

The operation created a visible presence in Andal, with multiple vehicles and security personnel outside Turi’s residence drawing the attention of local residents. The search also brought renewed attention to business activities connected to ECL’s collieries and the network of service contracts operating in the Paschim Bardhaman coal belt. Further details are expected if the ED releases information about the investigation, the material examined during the searches or any action taken following the operation.
