ED Raids Kolkata Police DCP, Others In PMLA Probe Linked To Criminal Syndicate
ED raids Kolkata Police officer in probe tied to criminal syndicate and money-laundering case.
The Enforcement Directorate on Sunday carried out searches at premises linked to a senior Kolkata Police officer as part of an ongoing money-laundering investigation tied to an alleged local crime syndicate. Officials confirmed that the raids targeted Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas and another individual associated with the case.
According to investigators, two premises connected to Biswas, including his residence in the Ballygunge area of Kolkata, were searched under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A third location linked to Joy Kamdar, Managing Director of Sun Enterprise, was also covered during the operation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the outcome of the latest searches.
The probe is linked to a money-laundering case involving alleged criminal Biswajit Podder, also known as Sona Pappu, who faces multiple charges including attempted murder and extortion. The case originates from a First Information Report registered by Kolkata Police, citing offences such as rioting, criminal conspiracy, and violations under the Arms Act.

Officials said the Enforcement Directorate had earlier conducted searches in the case on April 1, during which they seized ₹1.47 crore in cash along with gold jewellery and silver valued at ₹67.64 lakh. A country-made revolver was also recovered during those operations, pointing to the alleged involvement of an organised criminal network.
In a statement issued earlier this month, the agency alleged that Podder and his associates were engaged in organised criminal activities across West Bengal, generating illicit funds through extortion and other unlawful means. These proceeds, investigators believe, were subsequently laundered through various channels.
Podder is currently absconding and is also wanted in connection with a violent incident reported on Kankulia Road near Golpark in Kolkata. The Enforcement Directorate has issued summons to him, but he has not yet appeared for questioning. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged syndicate and its financial operations.
