EC Certifies C P Radhakrishnan As Vice President, Oath On Friday
The Election Commission confirms the result; President Murmu to administer oath on September 12.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) officially certified C. P. Radhakrishnan's election as the 15th Vice President on Wednesday, paving the way for his formal induction into the role. Radhakrishnan, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former governor of Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Telangana, secured victory in the vice-presidential poll held on Tuesday. This certification marks a key procedural step in India's democratic process, where the Vice President also serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.
The certification was signed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Vivek Joshi and S. S. S. Sandhu. A signed copy was subsequently delivered to the Union Home Secretary by Deputy Election Commissioner Bhanu Prakash Yeturu and Secretary Suman Kumar Das. This document will be read during the oath-taking ceremony. Officials indicated that President Droupadi Murmu is expected to administer the oath to the 67-year-old Radhakrishnan at a formal event in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, September 12, ensuring continuity in the constitutional position.
Radhakrishnan triumphed over joint opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes in the election, which saw participation from members of Parliament. His win reflects the ruling National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) strong parliamentary support. Radhakrishnan's political career spans decades, including roles in state politics in Tamil Nadu and gubernatorial positions, bringing administrative experience to the vice presidency.
