Durgapur Case: West Bengal Police Reconstruct Gang-Rape Scene in Medical Student Case

West Bengal Police advanced their investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a second-year medical student by conducting a detailed crime scene reconstruction on Tuesday. Led by Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, a large team arrived at the secluded spot near a private medical college in Shobhapur. The exercise aimed to verify the sequence of events from October 10, 2025, when the 23-year-old Odisha native was reportedly assaulted after leaving campus with a male friend. Heavy security ensured privacy, barring media from approaching the site to maintain investigative integrity.

The reconstruction involved key figures, including the victim's male classmate, who was brought to demonstrate his movements and statements. Two accused, Sheikh Riazuddin and Sheikh Nasiruddin, were also present to reenact their roles, helping officers map the assault's progression in the forested area behind the hospital. This step is essential for corroborating accounts, identifying inconsistencies, and integrating forensic evidence like location data from mobile phones. Authorities emphasized that such recreations strengthen the case by aligning physical evidence with narratives provided by the five arrested suspects.

Earlier in the day, Riazuddin and Nasiruddin were taken to their native Bijra village for separate verifications, involving joint teams from local police stations. Sources indicate potential links to the crime's planning or tools may originate there, prompting discreet inquiries among villagers. The rapid arrests—three on October 12 and two on October 13—followed the survivor's complaint and medical confirmation, with one suspect reportedly affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, adding political dimensions.

The case has evoked widespread condemnation, reminiscent of the 2024 RG Kar incident, prompting calls for better campus safety from medical bodies and activists. Ananda Bose advocated for swift justice during a meeting with the victim's relatives.

As the probe progresses toward a chargesheet, incorporating DNA and CCTV analysis, it underscores systemic issues in protecting students. With all accused in custody, the reconstruction marks a critical juncture, potentially influencing trial outcomes and policy reforms in educational institutions across the state.
