Drug Bust in Meghalaya: Rs 2.5 Crore Heroin Seized

Two arrested in massive narcotics raid in West Jaintia Hills.

Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills Police, alongside the state’s Anti-Narcotic Task Force, intercepted a vehicle carrying a staggering haul of heroin valued at Rs 2.5 crore in the international market. The bust, which took place near Phramer Mer police traffic cell on Sunday, led to the arrest of two individuals from Manipur, identified as Chuchung Serto from Kangpokpi district and Thanggin Towthang from Churachandpur district.

Acting on a credible tip-off, the joint team swooped in on the Jowai-bound vehicle coming from Khliehriat. A meticulous search uncovered 50 soap boxes concealing 512.63 grams of heroin, a discovery that has sent shockwaves through the region. District Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad revealed that the operation was a significant blow to the illegal drug trade in Meghalaya, highlighting the police’s commitment to curbing narcotics trafficking.

In addition to the heroin, authorities seized currency notes from multiple countries, including India, South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Myanmar, along with two mobile phones. These items are believed to be linked to an intricate network of drug trafficking, possibly with cross-border connections. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the supply chain and identify any international links.

The arrests underscore the growing challenge of drug trafficking in Northeast India, a region often used as a transit route due to its proximity to the Golden Triangle, a notorious hub for narcotics production. Authorities are now focusing on tracing the origins of the seized heroin and determining whether the suspects are part of a larger syndicate operating across state and national borders.

This high-profile bust comes as Meghalaya intensifies its efforts to combat drug-related crimes, with law enforcement agencies stepping up surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations. The seized heroin, if distributed, could have fueled addiction and crime in the region, making this operation a critical step in safeguarding communities. Further updates are awaited as the investigation deepens.
