DRI Seizes 5 Kg Charas Hidden in Knee Caps, Arrests Three at Gorakhpur

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested three people, including two women, and seized 5.088 kg of Nepal-origin charas valued at around ₹5.08 crore at Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh. The seizure was made after the agency received specific intelligence about suspected narcotics being transported by train. Officials said the contraband was allegedly being carried from Bihar to Punjab, with the accused travelling on the Amarnath Express.

The two women allegedly concealed the charas in knee caps wrapped around their thighs and covered with sarees. During a personal search, DRI officials reportedly recovered 11 packets containing a blackish substance hidden inside the knee caps. A field-testing kit identified the substance as charas, according to the agency. The method of concealment allegedly enabled the packets to remain close to the women’s bodies during the journey.

The three passengers were travelling from Sugauli in Bihar to Ludhiana in Punjab when they were intercepted by the DRI team late on Thursday. The agency said its officers acted on specific intelligence and stopped the passengers at Gorakhpur railway station. The recovery of multiple packets during the search led officials to suspect that the consignment was part of a larger narcotics trafficking operation.

The seized substance was identified by the DRI as Nepal-origin charas, which the agency said has significant demand in illicit drug markets. The consignment was valued at approximately ₹5.08 crore, highlighting the scale of the seizure. Officials have invoked provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, in connection with the case and arrested all three passengers for their alleged involvement in trafficking.

Following the arrests, the DRI has begun investigating the source of the contraband, its intended destination and the wider network allegedly involved in transporting the drug. Investigators are expected to examine the travel arrangements and links of the accused to determine whether other people were involved in moving the consignment. The agency has not disclosed further details about the identities of those arrested or the alleged network at this stage.

The seizure forms part of the DRI’s continuing efforts to curb cross-border narcotics trafficking through the region. The recovery of Nepal-origin charas during a train journey also highlights the challenges faced by enforcement agencies in detecting drugs concealed in unconventional ways. Further investigation will determine the extent of the alleged trafficking operation and whether additional arrests or seizures follow.
