DRI Inspector Busted: Punjab Police Nab 8 in Amritsar Drug Cartel Sting
Punjab Police struck a major blow to a drug cartel in Amritsar on Wednesday, arresting eight suspects, including a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) inspector, and seizing 4.04 kg of heroin. The operation, hailed as a crackdown on cross-border smuggling, exposed a web of corruption and crime.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told reporters the bust began with the arrests of DRI Inspector Manjit from Rohtak, Haryana, and Ravi Kumar from Ferozepur’s Gandhi Nagar. “Manjit misused his anti-smuggling role to aid the network, while Ravi linked directly to foreign smugglers,” Bhullar said, noting the duo sourced drugs from across the border. A motorcycle used for deliveries was seized.
The probe snowballed, nabbing six more—Palwinder Singh (Tindu), Rohit Sharma (Rohit), Abhishek Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Amit Kumar (Sonu), and Satnam Singh—all Amritsar locals tied to smuggling and hawala financing. Amit, Bhullar revealed, ran a cross-border hawala racket fueling the trade. Multiple FIRs under the NDPS Act were filed at Chheharta and Ranjit Avenue stations.
Bhullar stressed the investigation’s reach: “We’re tracing the full network—suppliers, dealers, buyers—and hunting another accomplice plus the consignment’s intended recipient.” The haul’s total scale remains under scrutiny as police dig deeper. The bust, unfolding just before 9:05 PM IST, aligns with CM Bhagwant Mann’s anti-drug push, spotlighting even enforcement insiders in the crosshairs. For now, Amritsar’s streets are a battleground—and the cartel’s unraveling is far from over.
