Dreaded Jharkhand Criminal Shot Dead in Police Encounter

A notorious criminal, wanted in multiple serious cases across Jharkhand, was shot dead in a police encounter in Godda district early Monday morning after allegedly attempting to flee from custody. The deceased, identified as Surya Narayan Hansda, also known as Surya Hansda, had been on the radar of law enforcement for a string of offences in both Godda and Sahibganj districts, according to Dumka Zonal Inspector General Shailendra Kumar Sinha.

Hansda’s arrest came on Sunday when Godda police apprehended him from Deoghar. Following his detention, authorities took him to Lalmatia in connection with an ongoing investigation, with the specific purpose of locating and recovering weapons believed to be linked to his criminal activities. However, the situation escalated dramatically during the operation when Hansda’s alleged associates ambushed the police team, opening fire in an apparent bid to free him.

Amid the chaos, police officials reported that Hansda himself made a break for freedom, attempting to escape from custody. Officers on the scene responded with retaliatory fire to neutralise the threat posed by both the associates and Hansda’s sudden escape attempt. In the exchange of gunfire, Hansda sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Authorities have stated that the operation was conducted in accordance with legal procedures and in response to the immediate danger posed to the police team. Investigations are now underway to identify and apprehend the associates who initiated the attack. Police officials emphasised that Hansda had been a significant figure in the local criminal network, and his death marks a notable development in ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the region.
