DMK Demands AIADMK Leave BJP Before Historic Alliance Against Vijay

DMK demands AIADMK leave BJP before historic alliance against Vijay TVK.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has reportedly told rival All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam that any possibility of a political understanding between the two parties would depend on the AIADMK severing its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The development comes amid intense political speculation in Tamil Nadu following actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party’s strong electoral performance, which has unsettled the state’s traditional political structure.

According to sources within the DMK, the ruling party is unwilling to consider any arrangement with a party aligned to what it described as a “communal” force. The comments are being viewed as a direct reference to the BJP, which has been attempting to expand its political footprint in Tamil Nadu over recent years. While no official announcement has been made by either side, reports of informal discussions between the Dravidian rivals have triggered widespread debate across the state’s political circles.

The possibility of cooperation between the DMK and AIADMK is unprecedented given the decades-long rivalry between the two parties, which have dominated Tamil Nadu politics since the late 1960s. The two Dravidian parties have traditionally positioned themselves as ideological and electoral opponents, alternating power for decades while building distinct political identities rooted in regional pride and social justice movements. Any form of alliance between them would represent one of the biggest political shifts in the state’s modern history.

The discussions are believed to have gained urgency after Vijay’s political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as a significant force following its recent electoral success. Political observers believe the rise of the actor’s party has created anxiety among established players who fear a major reshaping of Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape. Vijay’s popularity among younger voters and urban audiences has added to concerns that traditional vote banks could face fragmentation in future elections.

The AIADMK has so far not publicly responded to the reported demand from the DMK. The party has maintained its alliance with the BJP in recent electoral contests despite criticism from sections of the opposition and internal debate over the partnership’s political impact in Tamil Nadu. BJP leaders have repeatedly defended the alliance, arguing that it strengthens opposition unity against the ruling DMK and provides a broader national connection for the AIADMK.

Political analysts say the reports reflect the rapidly evolving nature of Tamil Nadu politics ahead of future state and national elections. While a formal alliance between the DMK and AIADMK still appears unlikely given their historical rivalry, the emergence of Vijay’s party has introduced new calculations for established political groups. The coming months are expected to determine whether the speculation remains political theatre or develops into a serious strategic realignment within the state.
