Dianna Russini Resigns From The Athletic, Drawing Reaction From Dave Portnoy

Dave Portnoy reacts to Russini’s Athletic resignation.

The ongoing saga involving NFL Reporter Dianna Russini and New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel took another turn as Russini announced her immediate resignation from The Athletic on Tuesday. The move comes days after photos surfaced showing the two at a luxury hotel in Sedona, Arizona, sparking widespread speculation of an inappropriate relationship. Both Russini and Vrabel are married to other people, and the images depicted them holding hands and embracing.

Russini, 43, a prominent NFL insider who joined The Athletic in 2023 after eight years at ESPN, addressed her departure in a lengthy statement to Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg. In the letter, she expressed frustration over the situation’s impact on her career and family, stating she chose to step aside before her contract expired on June 30 to prevent further damage. She maintained that the published photos showed an innocent interaction and criticized the scrutiny she faced. The Athletic confirmed the resignation, noting that new questions had arisen during its internal review of the matter.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy offered a blunt reaction to Russini’s explanation, claiming it “makes zero sense.” In a post on X, the outspoken media personality and Patriots fan wrote: “If we’re just being honest this explanation really makes zero sense. I don’t think anybody should lose their job over alleged canoodling but this statement makes it seem like there was definitely canoodling happening.” Portnoy had previously weighed in on the leaked photos, suggesting something more than friendship was involved while acknowledging the private nature of personal matters.

The controversy has highlighted ethical concerns in sports journalism, particularly the boundaries between reporters and their sources. Russini covers the NFL extensively and has built a reputation for strong insider access. Critics argue that any personal relationship with a coach like Vrabel could compromise objectivity, though supporters have defended her work and called for privacy. Portnoy, while defending the idea that personal relationships should not automatically cost someone their job, pointed out that the defensive tone of her resignation letter only fueled more suspicion.

Neither Russini nor Vrabel has provided further public comment since the photos emerged earlier this month. The Patriots organization has described the situation as “business as usual” regarding Vrabel’s coaching role. The episode has drawn significant attention across sports media, with discussions focusing on journalistic standards, the role of paparazzi in private moments, and the intense public interest in high-profile figures.

As the story continues to unfold, Russini’s future in sports media remains uncertain, while the incident serves as a reminder of the personal and professional pressures faced by those in the spotlight. The Athletic, owned by The New York Times, has not detailed any potential disciplinary actions beyond accepting the resignation. Public reaction remains divided between calls for accountability and appeals for respecting personal boundaries.
