Dharmasthala Mystery: 'Mass Burial' Whistleblower Arrested

Complainant's claims unravel as SIT uncovers inconsistencies in Dharmasthala case.

In a stunning development in the Dharmasthala "mass burial" case, the complainant who alleged widespread murders, rapes, and secret burials in the Karnataka village has been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday, official sources confirmed. The individual, identified as CN Chinnayya alias Chenna, had previously concealed his identity by wearing a mask while claiming to be a whistleblower exposing heinous crimes spanning two decades.

The SIT, led by senior officer Pranab Mohanty, interrogated Chenna extensively on Friday night after discrepancies emerged in his statements and supporting documents. Chenna, a former sanitation worker in Dharmasthala from 1995 to 2014, had alleged that he was coerced into burying multiple bodies, including those of women and minors, some of whom showed signs of sexual assault. He had even provided a statement before a magistrate to support his claims, sparking widespread attention and outrage.

However, the SIT's investigation revealed that Chenna’s allegations were fabricated. "After thorough questioning and verification, we found significant inconsistencies in his narrative and evidence," an SIT official stated. Chenna was taken into custody and underwent a medical checkup before being presented in court. The arrest has cast doubt on the credibility of the accusations that had initially shocked the region.

Adding to the complexity, a woman who had previously claimed that her daughter, an MBBS student, went missing in Dharmasthala has now retracted her statement, further weakening the case. Authorities are exploring whether Chenna’s claims were motivated by personal vendettas or other ulterior motives. The SIT continues its probe to uncover the full truth behind the allegations, including examining any potential accomplices or external influences.

The Dharmasthala case had initially raised serious concerns about safety and justice in the area, prompting the formation of the SIT to investigate the grave accusations. Local residents and activists had demanded swift action, but the arrest of the complainant has shifted the narrative, leaving many questioning the validity of the original claims. The SIT has urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information as the investigation progresses.
