Devotion Turns Tragic: 7 Killed In Stampede At Bihar's Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai
Seven killed in stampede at Bihar's Ashok Dham temple.
At least seven people were killed and more than 12 injured in a stampede outside the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday. The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered at the temple to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek on the third Monday of the holy Sawan month. The sudden crowd movement led to chaos near the temple premises, with several devotees becoming trapped.
According to Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar, an unprecedented surge in the number of devotees, intensified by the arrival of two trains between around 6.30 am and 6.45 am, contributed to the incident. A barricade outside the temple reportedly collapsed amid the crowd, triggering panic and a sudden rush. An electric wire was also reported to have fallen, while rumours among devotees further heightened confusion and caused people to move rapidly in different directions.
Local residents and fellow devotees began rescue efforts soon after the stampede, attempting to assist people caught in the crowd. Police and administrative officials reached the temple after being alerted and initiated rescue operations. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, while officials continued to monitor the situation and manage the crowd around the temple premises.

The Ashok Dham Temple, also known as the Shri Indradamaneshwar Mahadev Temple, houses a large Shivalinga and attracts significant numbers of devotees during Sawan. The month of Sawan, also known as Shravan, is considered an important period of devotion to Lord Shiva. Devotees traditionally visit temples, perform prayers and rituals, offer water to Shiva lingams and, in many cases, observe fasts during the month.
The incident occurred during one of the busiest periods at the temple, when devotees had gathered in large numbers for the third Monday of Shravan. The month generally falls during July and August and coincides with the monsoon season. It holds religious significance for many Hindus, with devotees undertaking various forms of worship and seeking blessings for prosperity, well-being and happiness.
Authorities are continuing to oversee rescue and crowd-management operations at the temple following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the barricade collapse and the sudden surge in the crowd are expected to be examined as officials assess how the stampede occurred. The death of seven devotees and injuries to more than a dozen others have cast a shadow over the religious gathering in Lakhisarai.
