Police recover 72 phones, crack multiple theft cases.

The South District Police of Delhi have successfully solved a mobile theft case within 12 hours, leading to the recovery of 72 stolen mobile phones, the arrest of three repeat offenders, and the detection of 40 theft cases registered across various parts of Delhi.

According to police officials, the operation was carried out by Police Station Mehrauli after a PCR call was received on May 15 regarding the theft of a mobile phone near a bus stand. The complainant later filed an online FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after reporting that two suspicious individuals had been seen near her shortly before the incident.

Following the complaint, police formed a dedicated team and launched an extensive investigation involving CCTV surveillance, technical monitoring, and local intelligence gathering. Officers reviewed footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras installed across the surrounding areas and conducted inquiries with shopkeepers, vendors, and local informants to identify the suspects.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police laid a trap near Chhatarpur Mandir Road and apprehended three accused individuals. During the search operation, officers recovered bags containing a total of 72 mobile phones, including the handset belonging to the complainant. Police said the accused were allegedly planning to sell the stolen devices in grey market networks.

During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to multiple mobile thefts across Delhi. The recovery helped police solve 40 e-FIRs registered at different police stations, while 32 of the recovered phones were also matched with lost reports filed in Delhi and Gurugram. Investigators said the group primarily targeted crowded public spaces such as bus stands, markets, and railway stations.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Manoj alias Kala alias Bullet, Suraj alias Chota Pawwa, and Sanjay alias Mohit. Police records indicate that all three have prior criminal cases related to theft, robbery, snatching, and Arms Act violations, with Sanjay alone linked to 19 previous cases. Further investigation into the wider network and disposal channels of stolen mobile phones is currently underway.
