Delhi Moves To Cut Government Expenses, Accelerates EV Push After PM Appeal
Delhi announced cost-cutting measures and expanded focus on electric vehicle adoption.
The Delhi government has introduced a wide-ranging set of fuel-saving measures for officials and departments following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce petroleum consumption and promote energy conservation. The new directives, issued by the Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, include weekly “No Car Day” observances, restrictions on foreign travel and a stronger push toward electric mobility.
Under the policy, one day every week will be designated as “No Car Day,” during which government officials and employees will be encouraged to use public transport, pooled transport or other shared mobility systems for commuting. Departments have also been instructed to minimise the use of government vehicles and increase reliance on electric vehicles and public transportation wherever feasible.
Officials conducting inspections, field visits and attending official events have been advised to travel together through carpooling arrangements or by using electric vehicles. The order also encourages departments to hold virtual meetings to reduce avoidable travel and fuel consumption. For inaugurations and official programmes, officers have specifically been directed to use pooled transport systems instead of separate official vehicles.

As part of the broader energy conservation drive, departments have been asked to rapidly electrify their vehicle fleets and install EV charging infrastructure across government offices and establishments. Authorities have also been instructed to replace diesel-operated and tractor-mounted pumps with electric pumping systems and permanent pumping stations wherever possible. The policy additionally mandates the use of organic manure for horticulture work and calls for faster implementation of green waste processing projects.
One of the most significant provisions in the order is the suspension of foreign travel for government officials until further notice. According to the directive, no officer or employee will be allowed to undertake foreign visits, whether official or personal, and any previously approved travel plans will stand cancelled immediately. Departments have also been ordered to submit weekly compliance reports on the implementation of the new measures.
Delhi minister Parvesh Verma said the initiative aims to reduce fuel consumption while improving efficiency and accountability in governance. He said measures such as reducing vehicle use, promoting electric mobility, encouraging shared travel and limiting foreign visits were intended to create a more efficient and locally focused administrative system amid growing concerns over energy consumption and sustainability.
