Delhi Metro Gang of Women Thieves Busted, Four Arrested

Women thieves nabbed in Delhi Metro sting

Delhi Metro Police dismantled a gang of four women thieves targeting commuters during peak rush hours, following a complaint lodged on Thursday, August 28. The arrests were made after Rajender Chauhan reported the theft of cash from his bag while traveling between Lajpat Nagar and Majlis Park stations on the Pink Line, police said.

An FIR was registered at Nehru Place Metro police station, prompting a swift investigation. On Friday, authorities apprehended the suspects near Sarai Kale Khan-Nizamuddin Metro station as they attempted to flee. The accused, identified as Laxmi alias Jyoti (40), Sanjana (22), Sandhya (20), and Jahnvi (22), all residents of Kathputli Colony in Shadipur, operated as a coordinated gang, police revealed.

During interrogation, Laxmi confessed to leading the group, which targeted vulnerable passengers in crowded trains. Their modus operandi involved distracting commuters during rush hours, stealing cash, jewelry, and other valuables, and quickly deboarding at the next station to evade capture. Police recovered ₹2,000 from Laxmi, who has been formally arrested, while Sanjana, Sandhya, and Jahnvi have been bound down under legal provisions, meaning they are released with conditions to ensure good behavior.

This bust follows a pattern of similar incidents, with Delhi Metro Police arresting five women in April 2024 for stealing ₹50,000 from a commuter’s purse on the Blue Line, using infants to distract victims. Over 4,600 thefts were reported on the metro in 2023, up from 2,700 in 2022, with women thieves often exploiting crowded interchange stations like Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate. Police have since deployed plainclothes officers and enhanced CCTV monitoring to curb such crimes.
