Delhi Man Killed After Refusing Matchstick To Light Cigarette
Fatal dispute over a matchbox leaves one man dead in Delhi.
A 30-year-old man was killed and another injured after an argument over a matchbox escalated into a stabbing incident outside a wine shop in the Keshav Puram area, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday after the victims, Bhawani and 32-year-old Asha Ram, were allegedly approached by three people who asked for a matchbox to light a cigarette.
Police said the victims told the group that they did not have a matchbox, following which a verbal altercation broke out. The argument allegedly turned violent, with the accused attacking the two men with fists and a knife. Bhawani sustained a deep wound to the left side of his back and was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Asha Ram suffered a stab injury to the lower left side of his chest and was also taken for medical treatment. He remained under care at the hospital and was declared unfit to provide a statement to investigators. Police said the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the sequence of events leading to the stabbing are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

A case has been registered at Keshav Puram police station under Sections 103(1), relating to murder, and 109(1), relating to attempt to murder, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said they used technical inputs and local intelligence to identify those allegedly involved in the attack.
The main accused was identified as 19-year-old Naresh Bahadur, also known as Nepali. Police apprehended him along with another 19-year-old accused, Tarun, and a juvenile, the officer said. According to police, Naresh allegedly stabbed both victims with a knife, while Tarun and the juvenile allegedly assaulted them with their fists.
Police said the weapon allegedly used in the offence was recovered at Naresh’s instance. Further investigation is underway to establish the complete circumstances of the incident and the roles of all those involved. Authorities are also examining the evidence collected during the investigation as legal proceedings continue.
