Delhi Infant Kidnapped for Relative, Rescued in Rajasthan
Infant Kidnapped, Rescued in Dramatic Operation
Delhi Police have arrested 32-year-old Jitender Kumar in Khetri, Rajasthan, for kidnapping a three-month-old boy from central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area, with the intent to hand the child over to a relative seeking a male child in exchange for financial gain, officials confirmed on Thursday. The infant was safely rescued within 18 hours and reunited with his mother, a Chennai resident, said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan.
The incident occurred on August 19, when the mother, traveling by train to Delhi to visit a relative, met Kumar. “She told police that Kumar befriended her during the journey, spoke to her for nearly two hours, and won her trust,” Valsan stated. Kumar offered to escort her to her relative’s house but stopped at a garment shop in Nayi Basti, giving her ₹150 to buy a dress for the child while he waited outside with the infant. When the mother returned, both Kumar and the child had vanished, prompting her to file a complaint at Anand Parbat police station.
Delhi Police acted swiftly, registering a case under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They analyzed footage from approximately 100 CCTV cameras and employed an AI-based Facial Recognition System (FRS) to identify Kumar. “His images were run through the FRS, leading to his identification,” Valsan said. A police team, with assistance from Rajasthan’s local police, traced Kumar to his native village in Khetri, where he was apprehended, and the infant was recovered unharmed.

During interrogation, Kumar confessed that a relative, desperate for a male child, had promised him financial support in exchange for arranging a baby boy. “Acting on this, he came to Delhi and committed the kidnapping,” Valsan revealed. This case echoes other recent incidents in Delhi, including a 2024 kidnapping in Jaitpur, where a 39-year-old man abducted an 11-month-old boy due to his longing for a son, highlighting a disturbing trend of child abductions driven by cultural preferences for male children.
The successful rescue underscores the effectiveness of Delhi Police’s use of technology and inter-state coordination. The investigation continues to explore any additional motives or accomplices, with authorities committed to ensuring justice and the child’s safety.
