Delhi HC Slams Sharpshooter for Firing at Cops, Denies Bail
Man accused of shooting at police in Mayur Vihar denied bail.
The Delhi High Court on Monday rejected the bail plea of Virendra Singh, an alleged sharpshooter accused of brazenly firing at police personnel in Mayur Vihar in 2023. Justice Girish Kathpalia labeled the offense "grave" and dismissed Singh’s request for bail, refusing to grant him parity with other accused in the case.
According to the prosecution, Singh and an associate were on a motorbike on Noida Link Road, Mayur Vihar Flyover, to deliver weapons and money. When signaled to stop by police, they attempted to flee, zigzagging until their bike slipped, causing them to fall. As police tried to apprehend them, the accused allegedly fired indiscriminately at the officers. The police responded with retaliatory firing, eventually overpowering and arresting both individuals.
The court expressed concern that releasing Singh on bail could jeopardize the trial, noting that his actions were distinct from co-accused who were granted bail, as they did not allegedly fire at the police. “The apprehension of the prosecution that the accused would hamper the trial is not without basis,” the court stated, upholding the denial of bail.
