Delhi 10/11 Blast Update: Early Findings Indicate Accidental Triggering of Explosives
Probe reveals terror suspect triggered bomb while fleeing.
Initial investigations into the deadly Monday evening explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station suggest the blast was accidentally triggered by a panicked suspect transporting a hastily assembled explosive device, following coordinated security raids that dismantled a major inter-state terror module. The incident, which claimed 13 lives and left over 20 injured, has been classified as a bomb blast under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, with the National Investigation Agency now leading the probe.
The sole occupant of the white Hyundai i20 that exploded at 6:52 pm was identified as Umar Nabi, a doctor from Pulwama, Kashmir, with confirmed links to the terror network busted hours earlier in Faridabad. CCTV footage shows Nabi parked for nearly three hours in the Sunehri Masjid lot, frantically checking online for updates on his associates’ arrests before driving toward the Red Fort, making a U-turn, and detonating just meters from a police post.
Forensic analysis revealed no blast crater or shrapnel, indicating a poorly constructed IED likely made with ammonium nitrate, fuel oil, and detonators. The Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory is examining 40 samples, including vehicle debris and human remains. DNA confirmation from Nabi’s mother is underway, while the car’s suspicious ownership trail—seven transfers before Nabi repurchased it on October 29—raises questions of premeditated planning.

The explosion came shortly after eight arrests, including three doctors from Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where 360 kg of ammonium nitrate was recovered. Dr Shaheen Sayeed allegedly headed Jaish-e-Mohammed’s women’s recruitment wing. Delhi Police detained several individuals at the university and are reviewing CCTV footage to trace suspect movements in the days leading up to the raid.
With Delhi on high alert, security has been intensified at airports, railway stations, and entry points. The Red Fort Metro Station remains closed, and overnight raids continue in sensitive areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and assured full accountability. While no group has claimed responsibility, investigators are probing Jaish-e-Mohammed and foreign handler connections.
