Death of Nurse in Singur Raises Murder Allegations

Nurse’s death in Singur nursing home raises murder and assault claims; police probe ongoing.

A 24-year-old nurse was found dead at a nursing home in Singur, Hooghly district, West Bengal, triggering serious allegations and public unrest. The nurse, a resident of Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district, was discovered hanging from the ceiling in a third-floor room on Thursday, just four days after joining the facility. Her family alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered after uncovering irregularities in the nursing home’s operations, a claim the management vehemently denied, asserting that she died by suicide.

The incident sparked outrage, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] staging demonstrations in the area, alleging murder and demanding a thorough investigation. The local police have initiated a probe and are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the cause of death. “We are waiting for the autopsy report before taking any action,” a police officer stated, emphasizing a cautious approach to the investigation.

State minister and local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Becharam Manna assured that action would be taken if the police investigation uncovers evidence of foul play. As the case unfolds, the conflicting narratives and public protests underscore the urgency for clarity and justice in this tragic incident, raising questions about safety and accountability in West Bengal’s healthcare facilities.
