Cuddalore: Drunk Police Officers Kill Two Workers in Car Crash, Two Injured

Police officer inebriated, kills two in Cuddalore hit-and-run horror.

Two daily wage laborers, K Vadivel (35) and V Jayaraj (45), were killed instantly Tuesday evening when a car driven by an intoxicated special sub-inspector plowed into them near Annaveli bus stand in Cuddalore. The victims, residents of Arundhathi Nagar, were dividing their day's earnings alongside fellow worker D Bhaskar (41) and hotel owner G Mohan (60), both of whom sustained severe injuries. The accused, SSI T Rajendran (49) of Avinangudi station, was accompanied by constable A Imam Hussain (33), and both have been arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed the officers attended a meeting at the Cuddalore SP office before heading to Puducherry, where they consumed alcohol. On their return journey to Thittakudi, the vehicle lost control and veered into the group standing near a roadside hotel. Cuddalore SP S Jeyakumar promptly suspended both officers and seized the car, ordering a detailed probe into the incident that has sparked local outrage.

Eyewitnesses and residents, unaware the perpetrators were plainclothes policemen, attacked Rajendran and Hussain in fury following the crash. Old Town police intervened swiftly, rescuing the injured and securing the scene. The bodies of Vadivel and Jayaraj were sent to Cuddalore Government Hospital for postmortem, while Bhaskar and Mohan remain under medical care with critical injuries.

SP Jeyakumar personally visited the accident site to oversee inquiries and assured strict action. Sources confirmed the officers were heavily inebriated, with breathalyzer tests pending formal results. The tragedy has reignited concerns over police conduct and road safety, especially involving personnel in official capacities misusing authority.

This fatal incident underscores a grim pattern of alcohol-fueled accidents by law enforcers, eroding public trust. As investigations continue, demands grow for stringent penalties, mandatory sobriety checks, and accountability to prevent such preventable losses in the future.
