Cross-Border Crackdown Deals Biggest Blow Yet To Bishnoi Network, 24 Held Worldwide

Global crackdown foils Bishnoi-linked assassination plot, arrests 24.

A sweeping international law enforcement operation targeting India-linked transnational organized crime networks, including the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, has resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The coordinated crackdown, named Operation Hard Ball, marks one of the most significant multinational actions in recent years against criminal syndicates accused of murder, drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, and cross-border violence. The operation was announced by the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California following a lengthy investigation involving law enforcement agencies from multiple countries.

According to US federal prosecutors, the investigation focused on three major transnational criminal organizations allegedly responsible for a wide range of violent and organized crimes affecting communities across North America and beyond. Authorities allege that Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently lodged in an Indian prison, directed an international criminal network from behind bars by using contraband mobile phones and encrypted internet communication devices. Prosecutors claim these communication channels enabled the gang to coordinate criminal activities across borders despite Bishnoi's incarceration. Investigators also allege that members of the network were involved in extortion, contract killings, drug trafficking, money laundering, and other organized criminal activities spanning several jurisdictions.

Federal prosecutors have unsealed three separate indictments charging a total of 37 defendants in connection with the investigation. As part of the coordinated enforcement action, authorities arrested 24 suspects across multiple countries. Thirteen of those arrests were made in the United States, including 11 in California, one in Indiana, and one in Georgia. Three additional suspects were arrested in Canada, while one was taken into custody in Spain. Officials also confirmed that seven defendants were already in custody before the operation was carried out. Investigators are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the remaining 10 fugitives, who are believed to be hiding in the United States, India, and Europe.

Authorities said the success of Operation Hard Ball was made possible through extensive cooperation among law enforcement agencies across different countries. The investigation involved years of intelligence gathering, surveillance, financial analysis, and coordinated enforcement efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across international borders.

Officials noted that transnational organized crime groups increasingly rely on encrypted communication platforms, illicit financial channels, and international connections to evade law enforcement, making cross-border collaboration essential to disrupting their operations. The coordinated arrests and indictments are expected to weaken the operational capabilities of the targeted organizations while sending a strong message about the consequences of international criminal activity.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been under the spotlight in recent years due to its alleged involvement in several high-profile criminal cases, including extortion, targeted killings, and organized crime operations extending beyond India. Investigative agencies have repeatedly alleged that the gang maintains an extensive network of associates in multiple countries, allowing it to facilitate criminal activities through overseas contacts and financial channels. The latest operation reflects growing international concern over the global reach of such criminal organizations and the need for coordinated responses to combat them.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, with efforts continuing to apprehend the remaining fugitives and pursue additional leads. Officials emphasized that international cooperation will remain central to tackling transnational organized crime, dismantling illicit networks, and ensuring that those accused of serious offences are brought before the courts.
