Court Orders Judicial Custody For Three Nihang Pilgrims After Karnaprayag Incident

Three Nihang pilgrims arrested in connection with a violent clash with local traders in Karnaprayag have been remanded to judicial custody, while a fourth accused remains under police supervision in hospital, officials said. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Chamoli district and left four people injured, prompting a police investigation and multiple arrests. According to police, the clash took place near Krishna Palace Hotel in Karnaprayag as a group of pilgrims was returning from the Hemkund Sahib Yatra.
What began as a verbal altercation between some of the pilgrims and local shopkeepers allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation, creating tension in the area and drawing the attention of law enforcement authorities. Investigators said four pilgrims allegedly attacked local residents using swords and kirpans during the altercation. Four individuals, including a local trader, sustained injuries in the incident and were provided medical treatment.
The severity of the injuries has not been officially disclosed, but authorities said the situation was brought under control shortly after the violence broke out. Based on a complaint filed by Gajpal Singh, one of the injured parties, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officers quickly established a barricade in the area and apprehended three of the accused at the scene. During the operation, police recovered three kirpans and two motorcycles that were allegedly used by the suspects.

The fourth accused, identified as Manpreet Singh, was arrested the following day from Karnaprayag Hospital, where he had been admitted for treatment. Police said a sword allegedly used in the assault was recovered based on information provided by him during the investigation. Authorities have continued their inquiry into the circumstances that led to the clash and are examining statements from witnesses and those involved.
The incident has drawn attention due to its occurrence during the ongoing pilgrimage season, with officials stressing the importance of maintaining peace and public order along key pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand.
