Controversial Honeymoon Murder: Court Approves Sonam's Bail After Three Rejections

Indore woman accused of conspiring to kill husband during Meghalaya honeymoon granted bail after 10-month detention.

A Shillong court has granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the high-profile murder case of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi. The decision came after three earlier bail applications were rejected. Sonam had been in judicial custody for around 10 months, making the latest order a major development in a case that drew national attention.

The murder took place in May 2025 during the couple’s honeymoon trip to Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. According to investigators, the couple went missing while visiting Sohra, a well-known tourist destination in the state. Raja’s body was later discovered in a gorge, prompting a major police investigation that soon expanded across multiple states due to the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and death.

Police later detained Sonam in Uttar Pradesh during the course of the investigation. Authorities alleged that she confessed to conspiring with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, along with three other individuals, to kill Raja. Raj Kushwaha and the remaining accused are still in custody. Among all the accused, only Sonam had moved the court seeking bail at this stage of the proceedings.

The bail petition was reportedly filed through the legal aid cell of the East Khasi Hills District and Sessions Court. Her legal team argued that the investigation had been completed and a chargesheet had already been submitted, reducing the need for continued custody. The petition also stated that Sonam had cooperated with investigators and was willing to continue cooperating during the trial process whenever required.

Grant of bail does not amount to acquittal, and the criminal trial in the case will continue in accordance with law. The prosecution is expected to pursue charges against all accused based on the evidence gathered during the investigation. Given the sensational nature of the case and public attention it received, further court proceedings are likely to be closely followed in the months ahead.
