Congress MLA Claims Similar Mood in India as Trump Shooting, BJP Condemns Violence Endorsement

Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar draws political fire for comparing Trump's shooting mood to India's anger.

A political controversy has erupted after Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar made remarks linking a recent shooting incident involving a public event in the United States to political sentiment in India. His comments, which referenced US President Donald Trump, triggered strong criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused him of appearing to justify political violence through his statements.

Wadettiwar reportedly said that public anger against leaders who act against public interest was “bound to happen", adding that similar sentiments existed in India despite the absence of large-scale street protests. His remarks came while referring to the shooting incident connected to a high-profile US political event, which he used as an example to discuss global political dissatisfaction and public frustration.

In his statement, the Congress MLA suggested that actions taken by leaders in power can lead to strong public reactions. He further claimed that former US President Donald Trump’s policies had caused widespread disruption and anger, not only in the United States but globally. Wadettiwar’s comments also drew a comparison between public mood in the US and what he described as a “similar mood” in India, which quickly became the centre of political debate.

The BJP strongly objected to the remarks, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accusing the Congress leader of normalising or indirectly endorsing political violence. The ruling party argued that such comparisons were inappropriate and could be misinterpreted as justification for violent acts against elected leaders.

The controversy has intensified political tensions between the two parties, with the opposition clarifying its stance while the ruling side continues to demand accountability for the statement. The issue has now sparked wider debate over political rhetoric and the responsibility of public representatives when commenting on sensitive international incidents.
