Congress Demands PM Modi Apology for Insulting Tagore and Nehru in Parliament Debate

Congress dubs PM Modi 'Master Distorian' for accusing Nehru of appeasement on Vande Mataram.

Congress on Monday strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling him a “Master Distorian” after his remarks in Lok Sabha regarding the national song, Vande Mataram. The party demanded an apology, accusing the Prime Minister of insulting the country’s founding fathers, including Rabindranath Tagore, and misrepresenting history.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared excerpts from Tagore’s authoritative biography, asserting that Modi had misrepresented facts. “The Master Distorian of a PM must render an apology. He has insulted our founding fathers and most of all Tagore himself,” Ramesh said in a post on X.

Ramesh further challenged Modi’s claim that Jawaharlal Nehru followed a politics of appeasement. Highlighting historical examples, he pointed out that Indian leaders like Syama Prasad Mookerjee, LK Advani, and Jaswant Singh had engaged with or praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah, questioning Modi’s selective interpretation of history.

The controversy erupted during a discussion in Lok Sabha commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. PM Modi praised the song as a unifying force during British oppression but alleged that Congress, citing social harmony, had “broken it into pieces” and followed appeasement politics, linking it to the partition of India.

Modi referenced Nehru’s letter to Subhash Chandra Bose, claiming it acknowledged potential Muslim opposition to Vande Mataram. He argued that Congress compromised on the song and bowed to political pressures, maintaining that the party’s appeasement stance continued even today.

The remarks triggered a strong response from Congress, with Ramesh questioning the PM’s selective historical narrative and asserting that Modi’s statements distorted the facts of India’s independence movement. The exchange has intensified the ongoing debate on Vande Mataram and the portrayal of historical events in Parliament.
