Congress Criticizes PM Modi Over US-Iran Ceasefire, Calls Pakistan’s Role a Diplomatic Setback

Congress criticizes PM Modi’s diplomacy after US-Iran ceasefire, calling his “self-styled Vishwaguru” image exposed.

The Congress party on Wednesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the announcement of a temporary US-Iran ceasefire, highlighting Pakistan’s role in mediating the agreement. The party described the development as a “severe setback” to Modi’s “highly personalised diplomacy” and claimed it exposed the limitations of his self-styled image as a global leader, or “Vishwaguru.”

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in charge of communications, accused Modi of “cowardice,” citing his silence on both Israel’s recent actions in the conflict and the reportedly “disgraceful” language used by the US President. Speaking to reporters, Ramesh argued that Modi’s highly publicised visit to Israel earlier in the year had already diminished India’s global standing, with the subsequent ceasefire negotiations highlighting the limits of India’s diplomatic leverage.

The Congress leader emphasised that the ceasefire, which was agreed late Tuesday and includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, reflected Pakistan’s mediation efforts. Ramesh criticised Modi’s strategy of isolating Pakistan for its alleged support to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that Islamabad’s successful role in the ceasefire contradicted India’s narrative and undermined the government’s foreign policy objectives.

Ramesh also questioned the Modi government’s handling of “Op Sindoor,” an operation abruptly halted in May 2025, which he said was first announced by the US Secretary of State. According to him, the repeated credit claimed by the US President for the operation has cast doubts on India’s diplomatic messaging and the Prime Minister’s strategic decision-making.

The Congress leader further asserted that India’s position as a “self-styled Vishwaguru” has been exposed, suggesting that Modi’s earlier claims of global leadership and strategic dominance have been weakened by recent events. He contrasted this with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s post-Mumbai terror attack diplomacy, which he claimed had achieved more concrete results in isolating Pakistan.

The ceasefire comes after US President Donald Trump pulled back from threats of devastating strikes on Iran. The temporary two-week agreement between the US and Iran has shifted attention to the regional diplomatic landscape, prompting Congress to question India’s ability to influence outcomes in critical international developments under the Modi government.
