Class 9 Student Attacks Hostel Inmates with Iron Rod; One Dies in Ballari
One student killed, seven injured in Ballari hostel attack; accused detained, investigation underway.
A tragic incident unfolded at a residential Gurukul school on the outskirts of Ballari late Saturday night, leaving one student dead and seven others injured. According to police, a Class 9 student allegedly attacked fellow hostel inmates with an iron rod following a minor dispute.
Addressing reporters, Ballari Range Inspector General of Police P.S. Harsha confirmed that nine children were assaulted, including the hostel warden and a driver who sustained injuries during the attack. “Unfortunately, one boy died in the incident,” Harsha said, noting that all parties involved were acquaintances.
The assault reportedly occurred after dinner while students were asleep in the hostel. The accused allegedly struck multiple students with an iron rod before attacking the warden and fleeing the premises. Police said the injured were rushed to the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.

Authorities have detained the accused student and deployed teams from the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to collect evidence from the scene. A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
The victim’s family has questioned the school management’s account of the incident, alleging that the student may have been stabbed with a knife rather than struck with an iron rod. They also claimed that the accused might be a drug user and held the school administration responsible for failing to prevent such a violent occurrence inside the hostel.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive and the sequence of events leading to the fatality. The case has drawn attention to safety protocols in residential schools and the need for stricter supervision to prevent such tragedies.
