CID Probes Fake Signature Allegations In TMC MLAs’ Support Letter For Shobhandeb

West Bengal CID investigates alleged fake signatures by TMC MLAs.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police has launched an inquiry into allegations of forged signatures of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs in a letter submitted to the West Bengal Assembly Secretariat supporting senior party leader Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the post of Leader of Opposition. The development has triggered a fresh political controversy in the state, with questions being raised over the authenticity of the support document submitted to the Assembly.

According to officials, the controversy centers around claims that signatures of several TMC legislators may have been falsified in the letter backing Chattopadhyay, who holds a Cabinet minister-rank position. The matter came to light after discrepancies were reportedly identified in the signatures attached to the support document, prompting further scrutiny by authorities.

The Assembly Secretariat subsequently lodged a formal complaint at Hare Street police station in Kolkata, alleging that the signature of TMC MLA Nayna Banerjee, representing the Chowringhee constituency, did not match the one she had provided after taking oath as an elected representative. This discrepancy is now a key focus of the CID investigation.

Following the complaint, CID officials have begun questioning multiple TMC MLAs, including Nayna Banerjee and senior party leader Kunal Ghosh, as part of efforts to verify the authenticity of the signatures. Investigators are examining documents and collecting statements to determine whether the alleged forgery was intentional or the result of procedural irregularities.

The allegations have added a layer of tension within West Bengal’s political landscape, with the ruling party facing scrutiny over internal documentation and legislative procedures. While the investigation remains at an early stage, officials have indicated that all relevant records will be thoroughly examined to establish the facts behind the disputed signatures.

As the probe continues, both administrative and political circles are closely watching the developments, given the sensitivity of the leader of opposition nomination process and the implications it holds within the state Assembly. Further action will depend on the findings of the CID investigation.
