China Welcomes Vikram Doraiswami as India’s Next Ambassador, Offers Full Support

China welcomes Vikram Doraiswami as India’s ambassador, expressing hope for stronger bilateral ties and cooperation.

China on Friday welcomed the appointment of Vikram Doraiswami as India’s next Ambassador to China, expressing optimism that his tenure will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. The announcement comes at a time when both nations are seeking to maintain steady diplomatic engagement amid complex regional and global dynamics.

Addressing a regular media briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing is ready to facilitate Doraiswami in his new role and views diplomatic envoys as key bridges for fostering cooperation. “China welcomes the appointment of the new Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami and looks forward to his positive role in promoting the continuous improvement and growth of China-India ties,” he stated.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced the appointment on Thursday, noting that Doraiswami, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, will take up the assignment shortly. He is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a position he has held since August 2022, following his tenure as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. His prior diplomatic experience also includes a posting at the Indian Embassy in Beijing, where he served for nearly four years early in his career.

Doraiswami’s familiarity with China is seen as a significant advantage, as he is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and has also studied French and Korean. His early diplomatic training included a posting in Hong Kong in 1994, where he undertook formal Chinese language studies, before moving to Beijing in 1996. This background is expected to help him navigate the complexities of India-China relations, which encompass both cooperation and longstanding strategic concerns.

He will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has served as India’s Ambassador to China since December 2021 and also has extensive experience in the region, including multiple postings in Hong Kong and Beijing. The transition comes as both countries continue efforts to stabilise ties through dialogue and engagement at various levels.

Recent diplomatic interactions, including the India-China Strategic Dialogue held in New Delhi between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, have highlighted a shared intent to sustain positive momentum. Discussions have focused on enhancing people-to-people exchanges, addressing sensitive issues, and coordinating on global and regional matters, underscoring the importance of continued diplomatic outreach between the two nations.
