A tragic incident unfolded in Chennai’s Anna Nagar as four members of a family, including a doctor-advocate couple and their two teenage sons, were discovered dead in their home on Thursday. Police suspect the deaths were suicides linked to overwhelming financial burdens.
The bodies of Balamurugan, 52, a doctor, and his wife Sumathy, 47, an advocate, were found hanging in one room, while their sons, Jashwanth and Lingesh, were found in another, according to Thirumangalam police. The discovery was made after Balamurugan’s driver, arriving for work, grew suspicious and alerted authorities. Police broke into the residence and confirmed the grim scene.
Preliminary investigations point to a debt of approximately ₹5 crore as a possible motive, with posts on X and local reports suggesting financial strain overwhelmed the family. No suicide note has been reported, but the police have registered a case and are probing further. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
This incident echoes similar cases in Tamil Nadu, where debt has driven families to extreme steps. The state’s health helpline (104) and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline (044-24640050) offer support for those in distress. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the full circumstances behind this devastating loss.
