Chandigarh Police Chargesheet Names Two Cops, Wadhwa and Sons in Alleged Escape Plot
UT police chargesheet names two policemen, Wadhwa, his sons over alleged hotel detour.
The Chandigarh Police have filed a chargesheet against five people, including two police personnel, in connection with undertrial businessman Vikram Wadhwa allegedly being taken to a hotel instead of being returned to jail after a medical examination. The accused named in the chargesheet are sub-inspector Jagmehar Singh, assistant sub-inspector Surender, Wadhwa and his sons Karan Wadhwa and Kunal Wadhwa. The case centres on allegations that the police escorts failed to take Wadhwa back to Model Jail, Burail, after he was examined at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16.
According to the police investigation, Wadhwa had been brought to the hospital for a medical examination while he was lodged in judicial custody. Following the examination, the two policemen escorting him allegedly took him to Hotel City Heart in Sector 17 instead of returning him to the jail. Police have alleged that the accused travelled in a private vehicle and that Wadhwa remained at the hotel for a considerable period. The circumstances surrounding the decision to take an undertrial prisoner to the hotel form a central part of the investigation and are now part of the chargesheet filed before the court.
Police have further alleged that Wadhwa met family members and other people during his stay at the hotel. Investigators have also alleged that discussions about a possible plan to help him escape from custody took place there. These allegations remain subject to judicial examination, and the chargesheet represents the police case against the five accused rather than a finding of guilt. Acting on information received about Wadhwa’s presence at the hotel, a police team later conducted a raid and arrested the businessman, the two escorting policemen and his two sons.

The chargesheet has invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case was registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 199, 261, 262, 62 and 61(2) of the BNS. The provisions relate to alleged misconduct by a public servant, escape from confinement or custody, obstruction of lawful apprehension, attempt to commit offences and criminal conspiracy. The inclusion of the two police personnel in the chargesheet indicates that investigators have alleged a role by the escorting officers in the circumstances that led to Wadhwa being taken to the hotel.
Wadhwa is also among the main accused in the ₹645-crore IDFC First Bank fund diversion case. The latest chargesheet relates specifically to the alleged incident following his medical examination and does not by itself determine his guilt in either case. The investigation has placed the actions of the two police personnel, Wadhwa and his sons before the court for further proceedings, with the evidence collected by police expected to be examined as the case progresses.
The chargesheet marks the latest development in the Chandigarh case involving the alleged movement of an undertrial prisoner away from the jail after a hospital visit. Police have maintained that Wadhwa was taken to Hotel City Heart rather than being returned to Model Jail, Burail, and that his presence there led to the subsequent raid and arrests. The court will now examine the charges and evidence against the five accused, while the allegations concerning the proposed escape plan and the roles attributed to each accused remain to be established through legal proceedings.
