Chandigarh Police arrest UP woman in snatching gang bust; the gang targeted evening and night pedestrians.
The Chandigarh Police has busted a snatching gang operating in the city and arrested a 26-year-old woman in connection with the case. The accused, identified as Komal, is a resident of Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and was apprehended by a team from the Sector 49 police station as part of an ongoing investigation.
According to police officials, the arrest was made in connection with FIR No. 31 dated April 17, 2026, registered following a complaint of theft and snatching. During the operation, officers recovered a black purse from the accused, which contained the complainant’s PAN card, Aadhaar card, visiting card, and ₹200 in cash, confirming her involvement in the incident.
Investigators revealed that the gang primarily targeted pedestrians during evening and night hours, using deception as a key tactic. Members would approach individuals under the pretext of asking for directions, engaging them in conversation to lower their guard before executing the theft.

The modus operandi involved one member distracting the victim while another positioned themselves behind to snatch valuables. After committing the crime, the accused would reportedly flee into nearby forested or less crowded areas in South Chandigarh, making it difficult for victims to immediately pursue them.
Police officials added that the gang is suspected to have been involved in multiple such incidents in the region. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused may have been committing these crimes to sustain drug addiction, though further investigation is underway to establish the full extent of their activities and identify other members involved.
Authorities have stated that efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend additional suspects linked to the gang. The Chandigarh Police has urged residents to remain cautious, especially during late hours, and report any suspicious activity promptly as part of efforts to curb street crimes in the city.
