Chandigarh Lawyer Arrested For Allegedly Shooting Woman During Eviction Drive

A court-ordered eviction drive in Chandigarh's Sector 42 turned violent on Saturday after a woman was allegedly shot in the face by her tenant, a practising lawyer, during the execution of a possession order. According to the Chandigarh Police, the accused, identified as advocate J.P.S. Chadha, allegedly opened fire with his licensed double-barrel shotgun when police and court officials arrived at the property to enforce the court's directive. He was immediately overpowered and taken into custody at the scene.
Police said the eviction team had reached the residence to hand over possession of the property to its owner, Manjinder Kaur, in accordance with the court's order. Instead of complying with the proceedings, the tenant allegedly fired from inside the house. The shot struck Kaur in the face, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where she is undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities have described her condition as critical.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dheeraj Kumar said a police team was accompanying court officials during the execution of the possession order when the accused allegedly resorted to firing. Following the shooting, officers subdued Chadha and arrested him without further incident. Forensic experts were subsequently called to examine the crime scene, while investigators began recording statements from eyewitnesses and collecting physical evidence to establish the exact sequence of events.

Police have also initiated a review of the legal status and use of the licensed firearm allegedly used in the incident. Investigators are examining whether all conditions governing possession of the weapon were complied with and whether additional offences may be invoked based on the findings of the inquiry. Authorities said further legal action would depend on the outcome of the investigation and updates on the victim's medical condition.
The incident has highlighted the risks associated with enforcing court-ordered property disputes, where tensions can sometimes escalate into violence. Police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that all aspects of the case, including the circumstances leading to the firing and the handling of the licensed weapon, will be examined before filing additional charges against the accused.
